I talk about collaboration a lot. So here's what I don't say enough: working alone with AI is genuinely empowering, and I get why so many people do it.

There's something that happens when you remove everyone else from the equation. You make the call. You move. You don't have to write the little note explaining why your idea is good, actually, and then wait two days to hear nothing back. AI shows up without an agenda, without a calendar invite, and without a single opinion about your process. It just helps you go. That's not nothing. For a lot of people, it's the most productive they've ever felt.

And here's what I think is underneath that: AI didn't just give us a new tool. It gave us permission. Permission to own our decisions. To move at our own speed. To trust ourselves without waiting for consensus.

Unfortunately, the collaboration a lot of people have experienced isn't really collaboration, it's creativity by committee. Six people who had to see the doc because the org chart said so. The good idea getting sanded down to the version nobody objected to. "Let me get some thoughts" turning into another week and no actual thoughts. Against that, going rogue sounds like freedom. Because it is. Working solo beats dealing with a committee every time.

The problem is we've let those two things collapse into one word, and they are not the same thing at all.

Real collaboration isn't a committee, it's a team. It's the person who reads what you made and comes back with the idea that makes it better. It's shared context that means nobody has to get caught up from scratch. It's alignment that happens because everyone can see the work, not because everyone had to approve it. It doesn't slow you down, it lifts the ceiling on what you can reach alone.
